Mornings just aren't my thing.  I'm not the type of person that likes to sleep in until noon, but I also don't like waking up at 6:00 am either.  I've gone through periods of time where I'm able to get up early, even on weekends, but they never lasted very long.  Don't get me wrong, my type A self loves the feeling of crossing off a ton from my to-do list before lunch, but if I am able to sleep in, I definitely will!  I wouldn't call it a New Year's resolution because it's something I've been working on for a while, but I've found when I'm successful at having a great morning, I'm usually doing these five things!

1 | Having a good morning starts the night before.  Try to figure out what your ideal amount of sleep is, and go to bed at a time that gives you the sleep you need.  For example, I know I need at least eight hours of sleep.  Some people were blessed with the ability to function off less, but I am definitely not one of those people.  Getting the right amount of sleep also helps me to be able to wake up without hitting the snooze button a million times!

2 | As soon as you get up, make your bed.  I started doing this a little while ago and there's just something about making my bed as soon as I get up that makes me feel productive and ready to start my day on the right foot.  Plus, it feels great to get into bed that's made at the end of a long day!

3 | Thirty minutes to an hour before you plan on going to sleep, turn off your phone, computer and TV.  Believe me, I know this isn't easy.  As a blogger, it's almost second nature to be checking social media, making sure your post is ready to go for the next day, and looking at your inbox one last time, but all of these things are overstimulating your brain and keeping you up.  Instead, try reading a chapter in a book or writing out your to-do list for the next day.

4 | I think just about everyone will tell you this, but lay out everything you need for the next day.    Even if I don't actually lay it out, I at least think about what I'm going to wear the next day so I don't waste time trying to decide in the morning.  I also like to pack my bag because if I don't, it's almost a guaranteed that I will forget something I need.  Another time saver I like to do is preset my coffee to go off 15 minutes before I need to leave and put out my coffee mug.  If you don't have a coffee maker with a timer, you can still fill the water and measure out your coffee so the only thing you have to do is press a button!

5 | Do something to get your mind active and ready to conquer the day.  I like to start off my morning by reading The Skimm and checking the weather.  It takes less than 5 minutes and I start my day off knowing what's going on in the world and what the weather will be like!  If you've got a little more time in your schedule, try going for a walk or reading through some of your favorite blogs and articles.

Whether you're a morning person or not, these five ways to have a better morning can help you reduce your stress and have a much calmer morning.  This is something I'm planning on working on these next couple months, so wish me luck!  Do you have any tips for being a better morning person? I'd love to hear!
