Purse: Phillip Lim for Target, similar Shoes: Tory Burch
So remember when I said I would be complaining about the weather in no time? Well, that time has come my friends. It snowed all day yesterday. All. Day. In less than 24 hours, I’ve gone completely stir crazy. I’ve been a busy body every since I can remember and will use any excuse to get out of the house. Starbucks run? We need something from the store? I’m out the door in less than five. But not yesterday. I’m not the best driver to begin with, and didn’t think adding the challenge of snow was a great idea. To make matters worse, the ingredients I needed to make dinner last night had gone bad, forcing me to get a little adventurous in the kitchen. So, where’s that “early” spring Phil promised?
While we’re all sitting here waiting for that early spring,
I thought I would take the time to go over a problem that I think a lot of
girls struggle with. The biggest question
I get from girls who work in a traditional office setting is that they struggle
to buy clothes for work that also work outside the office. After all, why would you want to spend all
that money on stuff you can only wear in one setting? My biggest piece of advice is to stay away
from buying “outfits” and instead stick to buying individual office appropriate
pieces that work well together and with other parts of your wardrobe. Neutrals are by far the easiest way to
accomplish this task.
Now, for all of you who are thinking to yourself, “neutrals
are boring, I need some color in my life!” I completely understand. I’m not saying you can’t wear color to the
office, I’m just saying neutral work wear is a little more versatile. If you just can’t live without color (and I
don’t think you should!), my advice is to pick a few pieces here and there; a
scarf, a top, or even a pair of shoes in the same color family that will add
that little extra something you’re looking for without going overboard.
By the end of a season I think all of us are feeling a
little blah with our wardrobe in it’s entirety, and are craving some much needed
change. Resist the urge to go out and
buy an entirely new wardrobe. Instead, pick
out a new color to liven up your neutral work wear! If you’re feeling especially trendy, you might
draw inspiration from one of Pantone’s colors of the year, or maybe you have a
favorite color for each season and already know which color suits you. Stick to your strengths my friend! Find those same pieces that were your pops of
color before and switch those out to your new color. This will be your saving grace when it comes
to transitioning your neural work wear from season to season. It’s the easiest and most cost effective way
to help you feel like you’ve spruced up your wardrobe with really minimal
effort.
If you’re not necessarily feeling Pantone this year and don’t
have a color you’re very particular to, I encourage you to look at your current
wardrobe. Is it all the same color? If so, congrats! You’ve found the color family you like! Or are you more like Rainbow Brite and have
something from every color of the rainbow?
If this is you, I encourage you to stand in front of your closet and
pick out the ten items you gravitate towards the most. Generally, these are going to be in the same
color family. Moving forward, when
you’re looking to add color to your wardrobe, stick to that family.
Well, I won’t lie to you, when I set out to write this post,
I hadn’t imagine I would end up talking about adding color. I mean the title is “Neutral Work Wear” after
all. I guess being cooped up inside all
day will leave one a little scatter brained! If you’ve got any specific questions about
work wear or need a few suggestions, feel free to leave a comment or send me an
email and I’d be happy to answer! Happy
Tuesday!
xoxo,
Kathryn
