Ways to Help Houston and the Gulf Coast

August 29, 2017
houston gulf coast hurricane Harvey relief volunteer donations how to help

As I sit in my apartment this morning, my heart aches for my hometown.  As many of you know, Houston has been hit with a torrential downpour for the past four days as a result of Hurricane Harvey.  Our family has been extremely fortunate in that no one has experienced water damage, but that's not the case for so many of my friends and fellow Houstonians.  Some have lost everything and while earthly possessions are just that, I cannot imagine what it is like to not have a home to go back to or know the next steps to take.

See You Later, Chicagoland

August 17, 2017

If you would have asked me ten years ago where I thought I would be at the ripe old age of 26 my answer would have been that I would be a physical therapist in Houston, Texas.  I was pretty sure of what I wanted to do and where I wanted to do it and there was absolutely no chance that I would be doing anything else in any other place.  I like to think that God has a sense of humor in that He gives you these little moments to look back on so you can laugh at yourself and remember to not take life so seriously.

These past four years have been some of the most challenging of my life, but also some of the most rewarding.  Adaptability has become my best asset, learning to go with the flow has become a necessity and I've thought I was going to finally lose that last marble I had been hanging on to by a thread more times than I can count.  But you could ask me a hundred times if I would change any of it and my answer would always be no.

I've made some incredible friends along the way, learned more about myself than I sometimes care to know and I broke out of the "never leaving home" mold that so many people fall into.  Moving has also given me a deep sense of appreciation for home, which is something I didn't necessarily know I was missing when we left Houston a couple of years ago.

I'm not quite sure where the next four years will take us, but all I can say is that I hope it will be as memorable as the past four have been.  To my Pure Barre Deerfield family - you have given me more than you will ever know.  Each and every one of your friendships are deeply cherished and know that you have made a lasting impression on me.  I started working at the studio knowing I loved Pure Barre and that I needed to find something.  What I found was more than I could have ever expected.  Not only am I in better shape than I was six months ago and have some amazing friends, but I'm finally comfortable in my own skin.  So for that, I thank you!

I will be forever grateful for the experiences we've been afforded thus far in our lives.  Moving around every year and living in four different major cities doesn't exactly sound appealing to most, but as I've mentioned before has taught us a lot and is not an opportunity many people get.  But now that this girl has lived almost all over the U.S., I'm ready to go home!

This isn't goodbye Chicagoland, it's see you later!

xo,
Kathryn

It's Okay To Say No

Lately I've found myself questioning whether I am being enough for enough people in my life.  Am I being a good enough wife, daughter, sister, friend?  And if I'm not, what more can I do to make sure I am being enough for the people that mean the most to me?  We're taught at a young age that sharing is caring.  I read a story written by a mom a little while ago that she was nearly shamed out of the park for telling her son he didn't have to share his toys with other children.  This really made me start to question, why are we taught at such a young age that we have to share and what lasting effect has this had on us as a society?

I've stated this before, but I'll just start this post off by saying again that when it comes to beauty products I am such a creature of habit.  When I find something that works I stick with it and don't switch until it either stops working or I get a recommendation from someone that a product is actually pretty life changing.  I also don't wear a full face of makeup every day, I normally just fill in my brows and put on some mascara because when you work at a barre studio you'd look a little silly wearing much more.  So, keeping that in mind, most of the beauty products I recommend are things I use daily and create a pretty natural look!
